Abstract
Objective: This systematic review aimed to investigate the effect of task-oriented mirror therapy on functional recovery of the upper extremity in stroke patients.

Methods: We searched the literature published between 2010 and 2019 using PubMed, National Science Digital Library, ScienceDirect, RISS, and KISS. The main search terms were ¡°task-based,¡± ¡°task-oriented,¡± ¡°task-specific,¡± and ¡°mirror therapy¡±. Based on the inclusion/exclusion criteria, 9 foreign and 3 Korean papers were selected.

Results: Of the 425 articles found, 12 were reviewed. The number of tasks used in the study varied from 1 to 18, and upper limb function, spasticity, and activities of daily living assessment tools were used to evaluate the effects of intervention. Significant effects were observed on the upper extremity in all 12 studies. Furthermore, in all two-group controlled studies, at least one of the evaluations showed a significant improvement in upper limb function between the experimental and control groups.

Conclusion: The findings of this study provide information about the effect of task-oriented mirror therapy on stroke patients. However, further studies are needed to identify a large number of populations, and long-term follow-up studies on a formal protocol regarding the type of tasks that can maximize the effectiveness of task-based mirror therapy are also needed.
